Jim Johnston

The crash happened on Sergeant Donald Jim Johnston's 23rd birthday. He was born October 20, 1921, the son of Donald Scott Johnston and Flossie Gertrude (Basom) Johnston. He had two brothers: Harry Scott Johnston and Clement "Earl" Johnston.

Jim married Mary Jane Mayhue (1921-2011) on January 23, 1942, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lewistown, Pennsylvania.

Before entering the military, Jim worked at a textile factory called the Viscose Company in Lewistown, Pennsylvania.

Jim and Mary Jane had a daughter, Mary Lee Johnston, who was born February 11, 1944. Jim was overseas at this point and never saw his daughter in person. He had seen a photo of her, though. Their daughter, Mary Lee, had a son named William Lee Johnston who now lives in Utah. Sadly, Mary Lee died on March 30, 1993 of cancer.

Donald "Jim" Johnston was a Technical Sergeant in the 1409th Army Air Force Base Unit. He got the following decorations and awards: Distinguished Flying Cross Medal, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart Medal, World War II Victory Medal, World War II Service Lapel Button.

Jim is buried at Luxembourg American Cemetery, Luxembourg, area F, row 6, grave 6.
